Watched it a good few times now and I'd have to disagree with your main point - the vast majority of the people find the joke funny in some form (seeing as the film goes through the variations and some people tell their own twist on the joke). It seems that because you don't find the joke funny, you've come to the conclusion that these people are pretending to be amused. Fair enough if you're not into that style.. But it doesn't mean people are deluding themselves into finding it funny.

But yeah the film isn't all that good, I find the editing a bit hard to bear - I'd have preferred if they at least spent a bit more time with each person instead of zipping between people so quickly, but hey.. That's the way Jillette wanted it. Just I think I may be able to get into it more if it were say.. 5 minute interviews with each person instead of 5-60 second clips of each person.

Yeh they should have really made it more of a narrative by concentrating more on each person at each point in the film, but I guess that's how the Americans like to make things sometimes.

It's not because I don't find the joke funny, I genuinely remember getting the impression from the way most of them talked about the joke that they seemed to be convincing themselves that it was funny, because it was this big thing that was supposed to be such a great comedian in-joke, rather than truly thinking it was. Many of them almost seemed to be trying too hard to find it funny that it was almost as if they were over-compensating for actually not. I seem to remember one actually saying they didn't think it was funny and they didn't get the big deal but I can't remember who. Stephen Wright's version was the only one I actually found funny, but his take on it seemed to suggest that he didn't find the original concept to be that funny as he'd turned it into a different sort of joke.

Yeah, I guessed it's because it's hardly a conventional film and they assumed people may find a sequence of straight forward interviews boring, so decided to try and keep it moving fast with the occasional longer 'scene'. Sssspppeccculaatttiooon. But yes, I found it hard to get into on the first viewing as I didn't find it particularly engaging.

There was 1 dude who was part of a duo who, when his partner told him the joke (apparently for the first time), he didn't find it funny and said along the lines of what you said you remember someone saying.

But again, after seeing it a good few times now, It never came across to me as people trying to convince themselves that they found it funny, excluding the duo (the partner does seem to struggle to explain why he finds it funny). You saw the film, it went into a number of reasons why people found it funny.. Indeed part of the appeal for some being that it's an in-joke, but not the only or necessarily the main reason. Despite the a.d.h.d editing I thought the context was made pretty clear and it made sense why the joke became a popular 'secret' with blue and black comedians having a constant struggle with censorship of all sorts.
